Youth Gun Safety

Talk To Your Kids
Whether you own a firearm or not you need to discuss gun safety with your children. The first conversation should be about what to do if you find a gun. At Family Shooting Academy we use the NRA EDDIE EAGLE GUNSAFE® model. We teach your child 4 simple steps when they find a gun:
  STOP!
  DON'T TOUCH!
  RUN AWAY!
  TELL AN ADULT!

When it comes time to teach your children to shoot remember to instill these basic firearms rules:
  1. Treat all guns as if they are always loaded.
  2. Never point the firearm at anything you do not want to destroy.
  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target.
  4. Be sure of your target and what is behind it.

Firearm Storage
As a gun owner it is your responsibility to secure your firearms AND keep them away from children. If a child gets your gun and uses it in a manner that causes harm to persons or property; you may be just as liable as the kid who misued the firearm.

Many devices exist to lock away firearms when they are not needed. At Family Shooting Academy EVERY gun we sell comes with at least one method of locking it up. We also sell locking devices if you need one for an existing gun. Locking device costs vary. You can spend $5, $30 or, for a safe, upwards of $1,000.

The FREE option:
PROJECT CHILD SAFE® offer FREE cable locks for any firearm you own. The locks are provided to local Police Departments free of charge. Check out the link above to find a Police Department near you that participates.
